Accommodation guides โ€” extra time, reader, scribe
Tribunal preparation notes for EHC needs assessment appeals

Who the toolkit is for

Any parent who has a child with SEND navigating the education system โ€” whether that is a first concern conversation with a SENCO, an EHCP request, an annual review, or a tribunal appeal.

You do not need to know the system.

The toolkit is written for parents who have never dealt with the SEN system before. It explains what each process involves, what your rights are, and gives you the specific words and letters to use.

What changes when you have the right letters.

Many parents find that schools and local authorities respond very differently when they receive a formally worded letter. The toolkit provides the language that gets results.

What the toolkit contains

Each section covers a specific stage of the SEN journey.

1
Section 1: First concerns.
How to raise a concern with the school or SENCO. What to say in a first conversation. How to document it. Template email for requesting a meeting.
2
Section 2: SEN support.
What SEN support should look like. How to request a Learning Support Plan. What to check at review meetings. Template email for requesting a review.
3
Section 3: EHCP request.
When to request an EHC needs assessment. How to write the request letter. What the LA must do and in what timeframe. Template request letter.
4
Section 4: Annual reviews.
How to prepare for an annual review. Questions to ask. What evidence to bring. What to check in the draft EHCP. Template request for a review.
5
Section 5: Specialist placement.
When mainstream is not working. How to request a specialist school. What the EHCP must say. EOTAS โ€” what it is and when to ask for it.
6
Section 6: Appeals and tribunal.
When to consider a SEND tribunal. What the process involves. How to build an evidence file. First-tier tribunal โ€” what happens at a hearing.

Exam accommodations guide

Many parents do not know their child may be entitled to exam accommodations โ€” and miss the deadline to apply.

What accommodations are available

Extra time (25% or 50%). A reader (someone reads questions aloud). A scribe (someone writes answers). Rest breaks. Supervised rest room. Smaller room. Access to a word processor. Voice recording.

How to apply

Accommodations must be applied for through the school before a specified deadline. The school needs evidence from an educational psychologist or specialist teacher. The toolkit contains a checklist for the application process.

Common mistakes

Applying too late. Not having the right evidence. Accepting the school's assessment that no accommodation is needed without question. The toolkit covers all of these.

Computing-specific considerations

For GCSE Computer Science specifically โ€” reading difficulties can significantly disadvantage learners in the written theory papers. A reader or extra time can make a material difference to outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the toolkit relevant for all types of SEND?

Yes. The toolkit covers the processes โ€” EHCP, annual reviews, appeals โ€” which apply regardless of the specific diagnosis. Some sections include notes on common diagnoses where the process differs.

Is this free?

Yes. The SEN Parent Toolkit is completely free. No email address required.

I need help now โ€” can Miss ICT advise directly?

Miss ICT is not a legal or advisory service. The toolkit provides information and templates โ€” it cannot replace specialist legal advice for complex tribunal cases. For SEND tribunal support, IPSEA and SOS!SEN are the main UK charities.
